One man launched alone into the unknown with just a couple of guitars and a piano. On what strange planet will he land?
Out in Space began when I took a few songs from Starguide and worked them up as a solo set for “The Summit" radio show. Heading into the Trout recording studio in Brooklyn for a day, I wasn’t really sure what would happen. But with Bryce Goggin at the controls, I shouldn’t have been worried. Bryce worked his magic and the tracks sounded great. This gave me the idea for an “unplugged" album.
It felt strangely satisfying to take the complex, multi-track arrangements from Starguide and strip them down for just guitar or piano. I’d loved working on all of the strange soundscapes of those songs, but in letting them fall away the songs took on new shapes, new spaces. And then there were the covers. For years I’d been fiddling around with Ziggy Stardust, Starman, and Rocket Man for my own amusement, songs that seemed to fit right in with the Starguide material. So, in February I headed back over to Trout for another day with Bryce.
The album title comes from the song Rocket Man. I’ve always loved Bernie Taupin’s lyrics, with their layers of meaning. They defy direct analysis and leave the impression that there are deeply personal references involved that Taupin is quite happy to leave unexplained.
